WDT: Departing Dem Wants Phone Tax

A county legislator defeated last week for reelection is proposing hiring more dispatchers and imposing a tax on cell phones, using the time honored political technique of supposedly linking the higher tax to something wanted (presumably).  It's like Bill deBlasio's proposed tax hike on the rich to pay for Head Start for the kids.
No tax is linked to a specific expenditure.
Dispatching emergency services is part of providing emergency serves. The Legislature can reorder priorities and devote more to this function or they can raise the broader based property or sales taxes and see how that goes over. Imposing a hidden, niche tax is wrong, even though its been done frequently in the past. (And yes the City has them too, like the cable tax).
