News is about packaging as well as content and so I have been monitoring the local paper since the new boss there told me about a new look and approach to selling a product that has seen a generation-long slide in readership.
Today what struck me was the dominance of the front page by a story on obese cats in NNY homes. An issue more important than taxes, health care, housing, what DANC is up to, Fort Drum...all of it..
Chubby felines beat them all out, but the difference is the front page caught my eye, which is the first step towards jazzing up the stifling stuffiness. I still bought the Post as I like the tabloid format, but I looked.
Advertising people always say if you can't sell the meat, sell the sizzle....I might add that to hear the sermon you must first get the people in the pews.
I doubt the genie can go back in the bottle as far as competitors like Newzjunky but its good to see a more feisty, competitive attitude in local media.
