WDT: Stripers Change Their Name

Remember a few years back they had strippers in Adams at the fire hall. All they have now there are stripers.

Snowtown USA Closing Ceremonies a Fun Filled Evening

The revived Snowtown USA Festival concluded tonight at the Dry Hill Ski Area with a torchlight procession on skis followed by a fireworks display that thrilled the crowd.

Snowtown has proven a big success in its second incarnation. Some events in Thompson Park postponed due to weather are rescheduled for later in January. The Watertown Chamber of Commerce and the City Parks and Recreation Department organized the event at the suggestion of local citizens.
The original Snowtown USA in the 1980s proved difficult to sustain, but the new version works well.

13 Things Not To Say To Your Lesbian Friend - Cosmopolitan

        Only thirteen ?

How about when you are performing an SSM marriage, "are you sure you want to incur the wrath of the Almighty by going through with this godless and deviant act ?  I wouldn't say it, but it would be fun to watch the reaction of those gathered.
This Photo Has No Bearing on the Story but I needed a Visual Element and Didn't Dare Use a Photo of  Two Girls Making Out

The real third rail these days is "that's so gay" in reference to anything odd or nonsensical. Say that and the media itself will descend upon you more than if you say the N word, which we have been so brow beaten on you can't use it even to illustrate its inappropriateness.
Unless you are Kanye West, then its OK.  By the way, the new overused expression is a sudden look of disdain with the admonition, "that's so inappropriate."  Women especially like to say that.
As for lists of things not to say to groups with a special designation, I just try to use common sense and courtesy, realizing once in a while somebody's outrage detector will go off.  If your "gaydar" is working, you'll know what to say and when.
Now for the outrage over the Cosmo headline. Does everyone have a least one friend per designation. You have your black friend, your Jewish friend and some even talk about their Muslim friend, although that person is usually a doctor so no one will question your opposition to Jihad.
My favorite is qualifying your friendship by making sure you  acknowledge you know they are in the wrong political party but you like them anyway. "I am godmother to my neighbor's kids, and they are Democrats."
I am  fond of bragging I have socialist friends in LaFargeville, although I am quick to disavow their beliefs. It's kind of getting that way with Tea Party people. Admitting you know them can be more of a pain than its worth.
I like to think I have friends without the need to categorize further, but as I was telling my one-legged friend the other day, sometimes its hard not to notice.

Schneiderman Will Appeal Portions Of SAFE Act Struck Down

The State of NY saw a federal judge uphold most of the SAFE Act but the striking of the seven round magazine restriction has Albany vowing appeals and a fight to the end.
I would propose a compromise. Allow ten round clips, but not on Sundays.

Tiger Mom Makes the Case for All Not Being Equal

Try to codify what you see as inherent superiority for one culture, race or religion and you are assured of a scoffing press and accusations galore
The so called Tiger Mom, Amy Chau, has written books touting Chinese moms as better moms and list several groups that are just better than others. Ms. Chau and her Jewish hubby sure do make for an attractive family, but that may be as much due to the dogs as anything.

Sunday Morning Without a Cocktail One of the Few Remaining Blue Laws

Sunday morning is still home to one of those blue law anachronisms today's generation doesn't know about or even understand why. There are no drinks served in bars and restaurants before noon.
What's the harm in a Bloody Mary or a mimosa on a pleasant summer morning  ? None really but it's still written that serving sin can happen at 8AM six days but must wait till noon on the seventh.
Popular Brunch Drinks Include the Bloody Mary

Sec. 106.5 - Provisions governing licensees to sell at retail for consumption on the premises.

No alcoholic beverages shall be sold, offered for sale, or given away upon any premises licensed to sell alcoholic beverages at retail for on-premises consumption during the following hours:
  • Sunday, from four antemeridian to twelve Noon
  • On any other day between four antemeridian and eight antemeridian

Only a law written long ago would use 'antemeridian' instead of saying local time. State law does allow sale till four AM unless trumped by a county law further restricting sales.
A few years back the Sunday ban on liquor stores was scrapped and other stores are now able to sell beer Sunday mornings for off premise consumption.
A friend insisted to me last night that the Sunday morning prohibition is not true and that everyone does it. When you look it up you see the Sunday rule persists much to the disappointment of brunchers.
It is one of a long list of bygone rules that should change but likely won't.
