Problem Spotted Year's Back Comes into Focus as Northside Mom Protests Awkward Policy

I will stipulate I don't have children, but I was one once and I do pay school taxes so I feel I have a right to restate something I said years ago when plans were afoot to build the Creekwood housing project off Mill Street.
Due to decades-old boundaries the long vacant land was in the General Brown School District, meaning now, children could look out their window and see North Elementary, but have to get on a bus for the six mile trip to Brownville, leaving neighborhood friends behind and missing out on the joy of a neighborhood school.
The two school districts could not agree on a boundary change and the City district wants a hefty out of district tuition for a family caught in the awkward situation. It's just our policy, they say.
For those who accept what is without question and revere the sanctity and wisdom Big Education please do not read on.
A resident of Creekwood sent a nice letter and package to me today asking for help. We don't run the schools, but I would encourage my friends at the Board of Education to consider allowing this handful of kids to attend their neighborhood school.
No, its not a slight against Brownville or in any way an indictment of board members or administrators. (heck I play Words With Friends with the School Board President and she fills in on the HOTLINE)  Just what seems like  common sense and what's best for the children.
I can't do anything directly, but I will help her get her case to folks higher up who might want to help. Sometimes that works. Of course, I could just tell the lady to toughen up and get the kids on the bus and quit your blattin'......But that wouldn't be very good representative government.
