Now that the decision on a new area code has been put off till 2016, its definitely out of sight and out of mind. Obviously the shortage of available numbers is not as acute as thought and the Public Service Commission was hearing from lawmakers and others who don't want a change.
The 18 counties in the current 315 area could either split into two codes and have two codes in the same geographic area, forcing the dialing of extra digits for local calls.
Western New York split years ago with Buffalo retaining the 716 and Rochester getting the new 585.
In a split, we all know Syracuse would keep the 315, so that's why some prefer the overlay system. I would put if off for as long as possible, as the surge in demand for numbers may subside since everybody already has an Obama phone.
