It sounds like the recommendations of a new commission on state taxes is long on platitudes about reducing the footprint of local government. There's a lot of talk of carrot and stick exchanging some kind of rebate in exchange for "getting creative" about finding ways to combine services.
Locally, our county administrator says that's being done already and the problem is ever increasing mandates from Albany.
At some point someone needs to realize, gimmicks like rebate checks are not the answer. A reduction in programs and services would be needed to achieve real savings. Nobody wants to hear that, especially in New York where the leadership talks about the state's progressive history.
