Today in the Flower Memorial Library, a transition takes place as Councilman Stephen Jennings takes his ceremonial oath of office and offers his first formal public remarks on what he hopes to accomplish on Council.
Mr. Jennings has been participating in a series of meetings with city officials and visiting facilities so he can be prepared to actively participate in governing out of the gate.
It will be interesting to see his take on issues. Yesterday I had a nice chat with former Councilman Jeff Smith who stopped by City Hall for some good byes.
Also today, Councilwoman Teresa Macaluso begins her second term.
There are decisions.....The scope of the Fairgrounds Arena project, How best to accommodate changes in City Court. There are a couple of downtown buildings not currently part of the building boom and there are always budget issues including how aggressive to get with structural budget issues that threaten the years of tax stability we have enjoyed.
There is request from the Town of Pamelia to form a single user water and sewer district for property adjacent to the city limits. That will prompt a discussion on the best way to extend services.
There are the little issues as well including park rules.
Mr. Jennings cited neighborhood blight and poverty during his campaign and we will hear his ideas on those topics as well.
The public is invited to today's noontime ceremony.
