Last week's loss for Councilman Jeff Smith is something some of us in local politics have experienced, but many have not. The vast majority of local office holders get elected year after year without opposition or the prospect of defeat, so they don't have to deal with the emotion and the letdown.
Mr. Smith has been in the fray and found himself in a tough race for reelection as six people vied for two seats. Its a funny world as two years earlier, two incumbents got a free pass as few people seek office anymore.
Not so this year.
Mr. Smith has a lot of interests outside of politics including a hard sought career in medicine and a business owned with his wife Milly. They have a family and lots going on beyond the world of politics and at 44 Mr. Smith will surely have the chance to get back into it all if he chooses.
Politics, even at this level, has its own distinct orbit but there are lots of other orbits in life and for the time being, we thank Mr. Smith for his time in office and wish him and his family the best.
