Holidays are Less and Less a Respite From a Frantic World

The gradual creeping of Black Friday into Thanksgiving itself is not surprising as retailing is all about gaining the edge and garnering the attention of consumers.
I think camping out all night or storming the Wal-Mart and trampling the vulnerable is symptomatic of something in society, so why be surprised someone thought to open the day before ?
I saw one anti shopping sentiment on the Internet, but I don't agree with that either. If people want to work, they should be allowed to.  Not everyone needs to be on lock-down and for years I have enjoyed working holidays. Of course holidays are all about social intercourse so why wouldn't you want your neighborhood bar open ?   Whether we need Best Buy open is something for the marketplace to decide.
