The first candidate out of the gate for the 2014 race for county sheriff says he will institute better training and an ethics program in response to a series of personnel issues in the Sheriff's Department.
John Bocciolatt spent his career with the Portland, OR police department. That is a large metropolitan city, decidedly more liberal than the electorate he is appealing to here.
However, Mr. Bocciolatt no doubt plans to stress his status as a Watertown native and his desire to return here.
Certainly he can present himself as an outsider with law enforcement experience.
Mr. Bocciolatt is running as a Republican. My guess is the path will be cleared for him to get the nomination without a primary.
The big question is on the Democratic side where the current undersheriff, Paul Trudeau, is known to be interested in running.
Dems hint at other candidates with the most intriguing name the daughter of popular former Sheriff Al O'Neill. Colleen O'Neill is a retired NYS Trooper and also can claim the outside mantra.
It's likely going to be difficult for a candidate from inside the department to win Despite media harping, Sheriff John Burns still has support and his fight with the county leg over jail overcrowding. locks a GOP candidate into opposing expansion because that is the position of Republican legislators.
It's likely the only race of interest in 2014, so we will follow it with interest.
