There is no doubt the Times has soured on the current Sheriff, and they say they are listening, ready to help shape the selection of a new Sheriff next year.
Running for this office has a pretty easy road map. Be an outsider and pledge to run a professional and morally straight department.
The issues the Sheriff has like jail overcrowding will take a back seat as everyone will be trying to be the anti-Burns.
On the other hand, many people I talk to would vote for Sheriff Burns again, in large part because of the pounding he has taken over the jail and personnel scandals.
The Republicans have a candidate who is a retired cop. Democrats will likely do the same. There will be no thought of a true outsider, who is a manager and motivator and has the political skills to work with the legislature.
We will choose which double dipper gets the job. In that sense there is no need to listen.
